Russell Simmons Uses MySpace To Deliver Exclusive Message From ...

Hip-Hop icon Russell Simmons delivered a direct message from the President of the United States, Barack Obama, today, January 28, 2011, via MySpace. Simmons, founder of GlobalGrind.com and the author of the best-selling book, "Super Rich," has been this week's celebrity participant in the MySpace Hijack. He extended his week long take-over as the celebrity "Editor-In-Chief" of MySpace in order to facilitate the message's delivery and impact.

The Myspace Hijack is a progrom developed by Myspace where celebrities take over the editorial content for the week, populating the site with content that is interesting to them . Recently, Myspace has partnered with Black Eyed Peas and Jack Black.

Russell Simmons' message from the President can be viewed at http://www.myspace.com/everything/article/2011/01/27/an-exclusive-message-from-russell-simmons-and-president-barack-obama and is captioned below:

"Over the past week, I have had the great pleasure of taking over Myspace, which was suppose to end on Thursday, but I just couldn't let go. I have shared my musical influences, exclusive excerpts from my new book, Super Rich, inspiring content from GlobalGrind, the best in art and culture, and even a little yoga. I couldn't let go because I had one more thing to share. Nothing makes me prouder than what I received late last night from a hero of mine, the President Of The United States, Barack Obama, and I am overjoyed to deliver his exclusive message to young people of this great nation. As we move forward, let us move forward together as one."

With great love, all things are possible.
-Russell Simmons

"I've always believed that here in America, every young person should be able to set goals and reach them; to discover their passions and follow them; and to earn their piece of the American Dream. That's why, during the last two years, my Administration has worked hard to give people like you the opportunities you need to reach your potential and win the future. We passed the Affordable Care Act that allows young people to stay on their parents health care plan until they're 26 - allowing more time to find a job that carries insurance. We reformed the student loan system to put billions of dollars back into the pockets of students paying for college instead of watching it pad the profits of big banks. We've invested in clean energy and encouraged a generation of innovators working to start the companies and build the technologies of the future. We've ended combat operations in Iraq and brought more than 90,000 troops home from the battlefield, and also made sure they get the care they have earned when they got back. And, even though there's still a tremendous amount of work to be done, I promise that every decision I make in the years ahead will be made with you in mind. Each of you represents our hope for this country. Your generation will be the one leading America into the future. And if we do our part, I know you'll make us proud."

~President Barack Obama

Looks Like MySpace Sure Is Getting Lonely

MySpace is a distant memory for many - almost everyone have moved on to Facebook. So, is the case with me. But, today, I received an email from MySpace. In the email, MySpace asked "me" to come back to MySpace because "the new MySpace provides the best social entertainment experience on Earth".

I had no intention of going back to MySpace, but it made me wonder if the new MySpace and its subsequent adoption of Facebook login have yielded any positive result.

Turns out it did nothing to prevent the free-fall MySpace is in. Here is a graph (courtesy of Compete) of the unique visits to MySpace for the last one year.

In the graph above, A represents the month when MySpace decided to reinvent itself into an entertainment portal and B is the month when they allowed Facebook login. Neither of these have done anything to revive MySpace. Maybe the drop in visitors was slightly less in October, when the new MySpace was introduced, but there was still a drop.

The statistics from Alexa is the same too.

There is no doubt that Facebook has drawn away all the users from MySpace. However, MySpace was perceived to have something that Facebook does not have - the presence of musicians, celebrities etc. Even MySpace believe that this is their strong point and thus the transformation into an entertainment portal. This is what the email they sent says:

You can now follow your favorite topics in music, movies, celebs, and TV and get instant updates from around the web.

Yes Facebook does not have the same level of interaction between celebrities and fans, and I believe neither does MySpace. It has become Twitter's domain now. Most of the popular musicians are moving away from MySpace and it is now Twitter which has become the place to be.

Take for example Lady Gaga. If you compare the her MySpace stream to her Twitter, you will notice that all of her MySpace updates are from Twitter. Or take Britney Spears, her Twitter account is updated way more frequently than her MySpace account. So, isn't it clear where the fans will go to?

The new MySpace is clearly not enough for MySpace. It needs something else. Otherwise it will only get lonelier.

Russell Simmons Extends MySpace Takeover | Black Web 2.0

by Sherri L. Smith Russell Simmons Extends MySpace Takeover

Earlier in the week, we learned that Global Grind founder, Russell Simmons had hijacked MySpace’s homepage and music for the week. During the course of his stay he shared social and political commentary from Global Grind and excerpts from his latest book, “Super Rich: A Guide To Having It All”. Simmons also selected five unsigned Hip-Hop and Pop groups and gave voters a chance to vote on their favorites. The winners would receive a mentoring session with the Def Jam co-founder.

After a whirlwind week, Simmons has decided to extend his stay at MySpace. And to mark the occasion Simmons will be getting an assist from President Barack Obama who has tapped Simmons to deliver an exclusive message to MySpace users.

“I’ve always believed that here in America, every young person should be able to set goals and reach them; to discover their passions and follow them; and to earn their piece of the American Dream.  That’s why, during the last two years, my Administration has worked hard to give people like you the opportunities you need to reach your potential and win the future.  We passed the Affordable Care Act that allows young people to stay on their parents health care plan until they’re 26 â€" allowing more time to find a job that carries insurance.  We reformed the student loan system to put billions of dollars back into the pockets of students paying for college instead of watching it pad the profits of big banks.   We’ve invested in clean energy and encouraged a generation of innovators working to start the companies and build the technologies of the future.  We’ve ended combat operations in Iraq and brought more than 90,000 troops home from the battlefield, and also made sure they get the care they have earned when they got back.  And, even though there’s still a tremendous amount of work to be done, I promise that every decision I make in the years ahead will be made with you in mind.  Each of you represents our hope for this country.  Your generation will be the one leading America into the future.  And if we do our part, I know you’ll make us proud.”

So far the message has received over 11,000 views and counting. It will be interesting to see what other surprises Simmons has in store during his extended tenure as editor-in-chief. Until then, stay tuned for up-to-the-minute coverage.

As MySpace Implodes, Tagged Doubles Staff And Gives Everyone A Raise

I recently over heard someone saying of MySpace â€" “It used to be dirty, underground, seedy and successful. Now it’s prom at a private school.” The company is struggling to reinvent itself. But traffic continues to plunge. Comscore says they had 80 million worldwide unique visitors in December. They had around 90 million in October before the big redesign. A year ago they had 120 million uniques, says Comscore.

So it’s no surprise they let half their staff go, some 500 people, in early January.

Another, smaller, social network has apparently found a say to be relevant in a Facebook world. San Francisco based Tagged logged revenues of over $30 million in 2010 and are profitable with a staff of 50. We reported on that in late 2010 when I interviewed founder Greg Tseng. They’ve been profitable for the last three years.

And now they’re hiring. In an email to Tagged staff that we’ve obtained, Tseng gave an across the board 10% raise to every full time employee. And he let them know that they intend to double staff from 50 to 100 employees.

How are they doing it? They’re focusing on something Facebook has ignored for the last several years â€" letting users meet other users on the site. Facebook wants to mirror your real world social graph and doesn’t provide many tools to meet new people. Tagged is all about that, something we discussed extensively in our interview last year.

The email is below.

Dear team,

As announced at today’s team meeting, we have delivered another record year in 2010, increasing revenue to over $30 million and completing our third straight year of profitability!

Who made this happen? WE ALL DID.

So, I am delighted that these results allow me to announce that Tagged will be awarding a 10% raise â€" across to the board â€" to every full-time employee effective January 1, 2011. Congratulations!

When the company does well, we all do well, so this is a well-earned reward for everyone. It is also in anticipation of big 2011 plans which will require all of us to contribute 110%.

This year, we aim to increase revenue to over $50 million, double our team from 50 to 100 full-time employees, and have our most productive year ever in product development. These are all important steps toward achieving our mission of enabling anyone to meet and socialize with new people.

I hope you are as excited as I am about 2011 and congratulations again on a record 2010.

Best,
Greg

New Mexico Daily Lobo :: No more space for Myspace

The recent redux of the website Myspace raises the question: Whose space is it, anyway?

Like most of the population, I almost forgot about Myspace, or as it goes by these days My ______. The former titan of social media only entered my consciousness because I was doing research on a local artist who miraculously still had a page.

Curious, I went to the homepage, and realized the space these days is a landfill of failed attempts to revitalize the social media relic.

Ads for Megan Fox in lingerie, a Chinese elephant man and features on Natalie Portman’s laugh littered the page. There were claims to top bands with Rise Against as the top rock band, or the top single was from Ke-dollar sign-ha. Guns ‘N’ Roses was another popular band, non-ironically from what I can tell. Yet another was a contest for a barbecue grill (really). A little more probing revealed even greater depths of trashiness.

I logged into my profile, after struggling to remember the damn password for a good 15 minutes, and was greeted by an improved newsfeed. The top of the list? An article all about Oprah Winfrey and farther down one all about Taylor Lautner.

Granted, Myspace users, or losers as they call themselves these days, can customize their feed to focus on whichever celebrity or band they would like, and I suppose the most popular celebrities automatically fill the feed with no input. However, this system sucks.

The suckitude of Myspace might be attributed to its redesign last June. Or it could be because the company just laid off 47 percent of the workforce. Or it could because no one on the planet uses Myspace anymore.

Pardon, that’s not quite true.

Last year, according to comsCore Inc., Myspace reported about 55 million users, a 9 million decrease from the previous year. Whether that takes into account dead profiles, and ones that are still around but no longer used like mine, is questionable.

I do know when I logged in, my friend count was 23, down about 50 since the last time I checked. I also know when I checked the statuses from my friends, about 20 percent said they had left Myspace for Facebook, and the rest were from about two years ago.
Out of all of them, one or two were updates (by which I mean only a month or two old).

Out of curiosity, I then checked to see if Myspace had a Facebook. It did, and it has about 437,562 fans. However, most of the comments on the wall are all about how much the new Myspace sucks.

This outrage over the redesign is by no means isolated. A group in England has even gone so far as to try to create a group to buy Myspace from its owner, News Corp Digital Media. The group collected about £13915 thus far ($22,183 in real money).

Obviously, the group has a long way to go, but its effort is a poignant statement about the fallen nature of the site: Some people still care.

I did more searching after figuring this out. Myspace is still a hot spot for fledgling bands just getting their music out there, and I suppose some people still use it for social networking, though I don’t really know anyone who does.

By and large, though, it’s become just another place to track bands and celebrities, services already offered on every corner of the Internet. The website seems to be adopting the idea that original content isn’t necessary so long as it has the name “Myspace” to go along with it.

Some popular comments from the site BuyMyspace.org include, “We are asking people to not accept that they cannot control what they use online, return to MySpace, but on your terms, ‘OurSpace’ ‘YourSpace,’ your rules.” Basically, they want complete control over their profile, a service already offered by Facebook.
Don’t get me wrong.

I have fond memories of using the site back in high school. It was a good introduction to the Internet world, but then I remembered the shitty parts of Myspace. Flash animations on every page, and even worse friend rankings that could devalue a person’s self-worth with a simple rearrangement.
There’s a reason Myspace went the way of the dinosaurs, though the ancient reptiles lasted longer. And while I don’t know the exact reason why it failed, besides Facebook kicking its ass, I do know more semi-nude pictures of Katy Perry or the Kardashian sisters is probably not going to save it.
Put in some semi-nude pictures of Penelope Cruz, and we’ll talk.

Russell Simmons 'Hijacks' MySpace for a Week

The hip-hop mogul is taking over as guest editor for the social networking website for a week, stating 'Turned it upside down & sideways.'

Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons has "hijacked" social networking website MySpace.com for the week after taking over as guest editor. The Def Jam Records co-founder alerted fans to his temporary new job via his Twitter.com blog on Sunday, January 23, asking for suggestions and tips on how to make the website better for its millions of users.

In a series of posts, he wrote, "I'm new ceo (chief executive officer) for a week...Taking over myspace next week any ideas... what should I do to improve it?"

And by Tuesday, January 25, Simmons had already made a number of adjustments to the site - sharing his love of yoga with readers and promoting his brother Reverend Run's reality TV show "Run's House" on the MySpace home page.

In a new blog post, he writes, "I've Hijacked @Myspace. Turned it upside down & sideways. And it's gonna stand on its head."

Russell Simmons Hijacks MySpace. Launches Hip-Pop Challenge and ...

by rahsheen Russell Simmons Hijacks MySpace. Launches Hip-Pop Challenge and Curators Program.

Starting today Russell Simmons is hijacking MySpace to host the ‘Hip-Pop Challenge’- a search for the best musicians in hip-hop and pop. Simmons has sifted through the unsigned bands and artists of MySpace and selected 5 hip-hop acts and 5 pop acts. The MySpace community will get to vote on their favorites in each category and the winner gets a mentoring session with the entertainment mogul himself.

“There seems to be a white space in the American entertainment spectrum. The gatekeepers are getting older and don’t recognize that a great number of American youth aspire to live in a post-racial world. Those gatekeepers that are intent on keeping the walls up present me with the great opportunity of ushering in a glimpse of the next America,” says GlobalGrind.com Founder, Russell Simmons. “Through strong partnerships with pioneering platforms such as Myspace, this Hip-Pop phenomenon continues to come to life.”

Russell will also be in control of the Myspace homepage and Music homepage. In addition to sharing his biggest music influences and Def Jam classics, he’ll be sharing political and culture commentary from GlobalGrind.com, and exclusive excerpts from his new book “Super Rich: A Guide To Having It All.”

Simmons will also kick-start the Myspace curators program. This program aims to highlight leaders on specific topics who demonstrate knowledge and influence. Simmons will be choosing Myspace’s new official hip-hop curator. In a six-month contest, users will upload videos explaining why they should be chosen.

“Russell is a true visionary and I am personally excited to offer him our site as a platform to discover new talent and express his passion for the Hip-Pop culture,” Said Myspace CEO Mike Jones. “He is the definition of a true curator.”

This isn’t the first time MySpace has been hijacked. The Black Eyed Peas kicked off the program towards the end of last year and Jack Black followed soon after. The Hijacks program is designed to offer MySpace users around the world access to exclusive content and creative programming curated by the celebrities, musicians, television and film personalities they care about.

timesofmalta.com - Facebook, Twitter oust Myspace for music fans

Facebook and Twitter have ousted Myspace as the hot new spaces for fans to connect with their favourite artists and acts, industry insiders say.

They are also providing a major new way to publicize concerts and persuade increasingly youthful fans to buy their music.

While 16-24 year-olds prefer to rip and burn CDs without paying for them, twelve-to-fifteen year-olds are the digital natives of today and tomorrow, influential market survey group Forrester's vice president of research Mark Mulligan told the music industry's annual MIDEM get-together in Cannes.

Though a mere 15 percent of this young group download peer-to-peer music and just 12 percent buy tracks, 56 percent listen to music on theirs mobiles and 53 percent watch videos on the Internet.

"Twelve-to-fifteen year olds, who represent the consumers of tomorrow and have grown up with the Internet, want rich immersive music experiences in which they can watch, listen and share," Mulligan told a conference here.

An increasing number of musicians have tuned in to this shift and are trying a variety of creative approaches to reach out to their fans in order to boost their popularity and their sales of music.

"Knowing how to use social media to connect with fans is key," Adrian Pope, director of digital and business development at PIAS Entertainment, told a conference entitled "Marketing to Fans - the new mix".

But fans want much more than just information about their favourite bands' upcoming concerts and the release date of a new track or CD, said Jeremy Welt of Warner Bros Records.

Canadian rock band Arcade Fire, for example, used Google maps to give fans an interactive and immersive video experience to help sales of their last album.

Their "Wilderness Downtown" video takes fans back to the street they grew up by allowing them to enter the address on a website, which then sends them a personalized video clip that includes images of their first home.

Grammy-winning singer and multi-instrumentalist, Imogen Heap, and lead singer for the Chicago-based rock band OK Go, Damian Kulash, are two examples of how artists are now connecting with their fans in a variety of ways.

Kulash said not being tied to a record label has helped him get in touch directly with his fan base through blogs and Twitter. And this has helped fuel his creativity, Kulash said at MIDEM.

Britain's Imogen Heap, who has been "tweeting" on micro blog site Twitter for a number of years, regularly gets her fans involved in helping her write new songs.

Fans also sent in around 1,000 video clips of nature recently to enable Heap make a short film that was projected during her Albert Hall concert in London last year and also viewed by 482,000 people online.

But whilst social networks play an important role in helping artists build a high profile with fans, it is still not clear whether this really boosts sales of their music.

"We are trying to be social to get paid," Eric Garland, CEO of media tracking and technology company BigChampagne, said at MIDEM.

"But there often is no correlation between an artist's popularity on the Internet and their sales of music," Garland added.

Heap however revealed here that when she recently travelled to Jakarta in Indonesia to give a concert, thousands turned up at the gig to her great surprise.

How had word had got around the concert? Because of her blogs and tweets, she said.

Why My Band Left MySpace & Facebook – For Good - hypebot

At a time when artists are being encouraged to get even more involved with social media and networks, your group did something radical. You left.

You maintained an e-mail list and created discussion with fans. That's it.

Hypebot: What motivated you to leave Facebook and MySpace? How did you establish a more secure connection with your fans through e-mail as a result?

Robin Davey: No matter how many fans you have on a social network, it is the platform itself that dictates how you can communicate with them, how you can post updates, how many words you can use â€" the connectivity with fans is limited.

When MySpace crashed, we lost that connectivity with 40,000 + legitimate fans and our 1 million or so plays became meaningless, it is nothing more than a number. When it comes to your next release, it means nothing unless you can reach those fans again. It quickly became apparent that we could not communicate with our fans the way we wanted through these means.

We have always maintained an email list and we realized that the majority of our traffic came from posting direct to our fans through this platform. We decided to stop updating our social networks and exclusively use our email list last year. The overwhelming response from fans was fantastic. To make it a successful two way tool, when we send emails we are not just plugging our latest release, we mainly communicate our feelings and thoughts on topics we feel our fan base would like to talk about. We openly encourage people to reply and we feature the best replies we get. It's not actually that groundbreaking an idea, and I have to credit Bob Lefsetz email list as an inspiration, but it works very well for us.

When we made the switch, it was mainly musicians who wrote us and told us how wrong we were to do this and how we were killing our own career, but that's exactly what they said when, to my knowledge, we were the first band to give our entire album away for free download back in 2006.

If MySpace failed then Facebook and certainly twitter could soon follow suit.

You have to work at building a community of your own, whether it be live, or online, by making great music and creating good communication. Simply relying on social networks as your barometer for success is as unstable as the record industry itself and can disappear as quickly as it came.

Hypebot: You bring up a great point about how social networks dictate how artists can interact with their fans. They also dictate how fans can interact with you. What do you think the primary shortcomings of social networks are and how do these faults get in the way of the formations of meaningful connections?

Robin Davey: From a music point of view the shortcomings are that it's about socializing and not music. Things that get shared tend to be gimmicks, quick things to have a laugh about with friends. It's an extension of the bar culture. Meaningful interactions don't tend to happen at the bar, that's about joking around and hooking up. Proper conversations happen in relaxed environments where people have space to talk. There is no space to relax or talk on Facebook because everything whizzes by and time is limited. Again that's why we chose the mailing list route to interact because an inbox is your own environment not someone else's.

Hypebot: It seems like so much has changed in the music industry. Yet, in reality, many things are exactly the same. The advances to new acts are gone. The rest remains static. What has stayed the same in the industry?

Robin Davey: Well it is constantly changing but day by day, it looks much better for the individual artist and decidedly worse for the corporate world. They say albums sales are down again this year, but for an artist we can earn nearly as much through a single download as we could one album sale in the corporate structure. If we sell 1,000 albums that can net us a much as we would get from an advance by signing to an indie label. If we sell 10,000 records then that's the same as an advance from a major label, but to repay an advance of 100,000 from a major would take at least 200,000 sales because of the royalty rate they offered.

The big story is that the industry is dying, but that's what the record labels want you to believe. Bands used to look to getting that elusive deal and big advance as a sign of making it, but only the smallest number of those bands would actually break even, let alone make money from those deals. So all that has actually disappeared is that fledging bands can no longer reap the rewards of a big advance for simply displaying the signs that they have potential for success. It is now like any other business â€" you earn money from actual sales, not possible sales.

This just means that the bands that are great, work hard and justly build a following get rewarded for it. The ones who concentrate on showcasing at the hip venues and hanging out in 'the scene' will continue to live a narcissistic fantasy life telling themselves "if only the right person could see how talented I was, I will be huge". Those who have a future in the emerging music industry will be building a loyal following one fan at a time by playing every venue that will have them between here and Cape Cod.

Malcolm Gladwell wrote a great piece in [his book Outliers] about how The Beatles did 1,000 shows sometimes playing three sets a night in Hamburg before they were 'discovered'. There was a reason they were so good, and it wasn't simply down to the science of genes and lucky circumstance.

Hypebot: Why do you think the idea of some guy in the back of the bar discovering your band is such a powerful myth? Even though that's happening less and less these days, more people seem to be invested in the idea that this is how the record industry works.

That they will be plucked from obscurity tomorrow.

Robin Davey: I think it's because so many artists believe they are destined to be famous. Because of this they think it's just a matter of time before someone connected sees them and brings their undeniable talent to the world. If you work hard and gig as much as possible you increase the chances that someone will see you, who will tell someone else who knows someone who's in the industry. But you'll get noticed because you worked hard, built up a following and got good enough so eventually you can't be ignored, not because your natural talent outshines everyone else. When these YouTube sensations get noticed they already have 2 million plays, you don't see someone with 200 plays bagging the big deal do you?

Breaking News Today » MySpace Is Less Popular among Music Lovers

twitter-fbFacebook and Twitter are to surpass MySpace as the social network for music fans to relate to their favorite artists. Not only that, Facebook and Twitter also provides a new way to promote a concert artist in question, and convince fans to buy their music, such as reported by AFP on Tuesday (01/25/2011).

More and more musicians take advantage of social networking sites and look for creative approaches to deal with fans and increase their popularity. This method is also expected to boost sales of music artists concerned.

“Knowing how to use social media to connect with the fans is very important,” said director of digital development and business pale Entertainment, Adrian Pope.

But, although social networks play an important role in increasing the popularity of the artist, not yet certain whether this is also a powerful way in music sales. BigChampagne CEO, technology companies and media tracking, Eric Garland explains, “We tried a little socializing to get money. But, sometimes there is no correlation between the popularity of the artist on the Internet by selling their music.”

Indeed, in recent time there are so many social networking sites. And they all compete each other to be the most favorite. Myspace was so popular, it first appeared.

Twitter advertising revenue swiftly challenging MySpace

Twitter could triple its advertising revenue, and it looks like it will best former giant MySpace in the long haul.

Twitter - revenue

Market research firm eMarketer believes that Twitter could take in $150 million in advertising this year â€" more than three times the advertising revenue it saw last year. The analysts believe that most of this money will come from US companies and that next year, Twitter could be raking in as much as $250 million in advertising.

Surprisingly, MySpace was able to just barely outdo Twitter’s advertising income with $184 million, but the flailing company’s revenue has been consistently slipping, and it won’t be able to hold any lead for long. It’s projected to only pull in $156 million next year, versus $288 million this year.

While there’s nothing shocking about the fact that MySpace is in a slump, Twitter’s success is significant since the social networking site only recently jumped into advertising. Only after taking its time to establish and refine its platform did it start working on its business and promotional tools. But once Promoted Tweets, Promoted Trends, and Promoted Accounts came on the scene (amid mild and swiftly extinguished outrage), Twitter’s revenue exploded.

Social networking advertising revenue in general has experienced significant growth this year, EMarketer found that $6 billion will be spent on advertising in 2011, and that this number will jump to $8.1 billion next year. Facebook, naturally, is well ahead of the pack, and estimated to hold and grow this lead in the coming years. Still, the growth that Twitter is experiencing is very reminiscent of how Facebook shot to becoming a top advertising space, and also seems to be following a similar formula allowing businesses to mold their campaigns within the social network’s confines. Clearly, it’s working, and we expect to see Twitter’s advertising revenues coming in second only to Facebook in the next five years. It’s just one more slight against MySpace, which continues to lose any edge it once had over newcomer competition.

Let's buy MySpace – group sends open letter to Murdoch | The Wall Blog

An open letter

Dear Rupert Murdoch, News Corp, MySpace CEO, MySpace user, Social Network user, Internet enthusiast

This letter comes to you from a place of great frustration over the current state, and the future, of one of the first leading social networks, MySpace.com

It also carries with it overwhelming surprise, and some sadness, that a network containing millions of users, and one that sold to one of the world’s most powerful money men, has fallen on very tough times. A 50% cut in staff numbers is the latest in a string of terrible news announced from the once giant of the social network scene.

As with anyone that has always had a deep rooted passion for the internet and all that comes with it, it’s strange to think that a company not so long ago bought for over $500 million dollars would be seemingly nearing the end of its business life. Add to this passion for internet any sort of business sense, a knowledge of internet business in particular, and the situation moves beyond ‘hard to believe’ and into the ‘what the hell have they done’.

The rise of Facebook and Twitter simply cannot be any sort of valid excuse for a near total collapse of MySpace.

This is a social network that still boasts millions of registered and active users, is still used as a default place for established and new music acts to promote themselves, a social network that still has very high Google rankings for popular search terms, a social network that still has page views that would put most popular websites to shame.

Companies have been pondering over a cheap move for MySpace, Yahoo being just one big internet company thought to be mulling a move for the social network. MySpace CEO Mike Jones has confirmed they will sell if the ‘right’ offer comes along.

We say let’s take back a ‘social network’ that has a worth high enough that one of the richest men in the world will take his traditional media companies funds and purchase the website for over half a billion dollars. We say that with the right understanding and democratic choices on purpose and function of the network, MySpace can not only return to former glory but also prove a stable and rewarding investment for all its users.

My Football Club proved that given a common interest and passion the crowdfunding model can be applied to something as complex as owning and operating a professional football club.  This approach can work for a social network.

We need people wanting to use Bebo, MySpace, Twitter and Facebook, on their terms, with developments, design, functionality, purpose, promotions and general point of existence being decided by them â€" you, the user.

It’s amazing to see a network like MySpace in a situation where as a business it cannot run or be a success even after several attempts. It is very clear that listening to the users is key to any success that is to be had from the site.

We are asking Mr Murdoch to name a price, and to be fair with this price.  We are asking people to not accept that they cannot control what they use online, return to MySpace but on your terms, ‘OurSpace’ ‘YourSpace’, your rules.

Personal network that nobody can find or see? Sure, no problem.

Open network so everyone can see everything about you? Fine.

Want to play games and post scores? fine, but your friend might not want to see this, also fine.

Your choice, you’re in control of it all.

Social network users, want to own a piece of the biggest shift in the way internet businesses work? Pledge to help buy MySpace and be part of the future of a real ‘Social Networks’.

Thank you

The executive committee for ‘Let’s buy MySpace’

Gang uses MySpace to stalk potential threats | Scott McCabe ...

Federal agents say members of the Hispanic street gang here are using the online social networking Web site MySpace.com to make threats and find a former member so they can kill him.

It's common for street gangs to use the Internet to tout their criminal enterprises. They often post pictures of members displaying gang-related hand signs.

But now it appears they are also using social networking sites to cyberstalk potential threats.

According to a documents filed in D.C. federal court, a former MS-13 gang member is a witness to a D.C. homicide and was moved to North Carolina to prevent the violent gang from finding him.

But in April 2010, the witness got into a fight with his girlfriend, who also was a MS-13 member, and she returned to D.C. and told the gang that her former boyfriend was cooperating with law enforcement, documents said.

In June, the witness said that his ex-girlfriend had posted a cryptic message on his MySpace.com page calling an unspecified individual a "rat" that liked to "eat cheese."

The communication was posted a month after the witness was ordered to be deported to Guatemala, where the El Salvador-based gang has a strong presence, documents said. The message indicates that gang members would be sent from El Salvador to Guatemala to find and kill the "rat", documents said.

On Dec. 22, during a MS-13 gang meeting in Maryland, a MS-13 gang leader announced that the witness was being targeted for execution and that the gang was using the ex-girlfriend's MySpace.com account to send him messages, federal agents said.

According to the documents, the agents informed the witness about the meeting and he confirmed that the ex-girlfriend has contacted him. Authorities believe the gang was using the ex-girlfriend's account to try to lure him back to the gang to assassinate him.

MySpace – A Tradgey of Ambition - Music News, Reviews, Interviews ...

Written by Michael Carr

Last week MySpace announced they were cutting back half their staff across the board, which also meant the end of MySpace Australia. For many people these came as a massive surprise but to others it was anything but. Surprise or no, how does one of the most successful web phenomena in the history of the internet go from towering tall to falling flat in less than three years?

There are a million small reason’s why MySpace has lost so much traffic. Other sites like Facebook and Twitter proving to be more popular for social networking, sites like Soundcloud and Bandcamp coming along and taking away MySpace’s crown as the patron saint of independent musicians, the sites own clunky layout, not to mention how the ability to customise your own page led to so many gaudy browser crashing profile’s are all part of why MySpace has lost so much business, but really the key issue was that the company was too successful and in turn overconfident.

Writing for Pedestrian in his article The Death Of Myspace â€" A Former Employee Looks Back, former Social Media Marketing Manager for Myspace Australia Alex Wain points out that “for all the talk of the arrogance of upper management, the greed of Fox (and it’s insistence of plastering every page with ads) through to the utter lack of vision by the key stakeholders â€" the real reason Facebook won, wasn’t because Myspace made errors, it was because it didn’t feel the need to adapt.” Like so many figures throughout history, MySpace’s inability to see it’s own flaws and weaknesses was in the end the company’s final undoing, but looking at the position they were in it’s easy to see why they would make such a mistake.

With MySpace having not only a wider range of content than it’s competitors, offering music and videos, but also the power of the FOX media empire and $900 million in cash from Google behind them, not to mention four times as many users as Facebook, it is pretty amazing the company wasn’t able to blast Mark Zuckerburg out of the water. Their success though was another key part of the problem.

When MySpace was first hatched, it was never designed to have to deal with 110 million users. Despite this fact, after breaking into the mainstream the company then decided to try and bring in even more users, MySpace becoming some mutant hybrid music site/video channel/blogging platform/whatever else you could possible conceive. While the idea of a massive umbrella site sound good the reality was a site full of bells and whistles, none of them particularly well designed or held together with any continuity of theme or aesthetic.

MySpace is very much the Macbeth to Facebook’s Macduff, whereby because of an overarching ambition, one was defeated by a foe one never considered a threat. Also, if you’ve seen The Social Network it is easy to believe that Zuckerburg was ‘not of woman born.’

MySpace To Musicians: Wish Us Luck As We Try To Stay Valuable ...

  • Comments Comments (View)
  • Text Size: A A

Last week, a major debate on Digital Music News focused on the role that MySpace (NSDQ: NWS) Music now plays in the lives of artists and labels.

See more of our latest MySpace coverage
or add an alert for future coverage of MySpace.

That prompted a lot of conversation with MySpace: they wanted to respond, but just wanted to work out the wording and who would say what.  Ultimately, they decided that Roberto Fisher, vice president of Product for MySpace Music, had said it best. Here’s the unedited response…

“Thank you for the thoughtful article. I work at Myspace, leading product for Music. Our team and I here do read these articles and the commentaries.

“It’s always good to discuss things which aren’t black and white. We are listening to artists, labels, fans, and we know there’s a lot of features which could be improved, simplified, and opened up more. We’re continuing to work to deliver value to artists and their fans. We also know that the old models are changing as audiences shift and the needs of the music community continue to evolve. I’ve been working in digital music for 11 years now, since early days at LAUNCH.com and at Yahoo! (NSDQ: YHOO) Music.  It’s more challenging than ever to be effective online.

“We here hope to improve so many more things about our offerings still, and at the same time we have been able to introduce some truly exciting products recently specifically designed to help artists, such as an open fan management platform and an open stats platform. The fan program let’s bands build their fanbase and message them wherever they are, and the stats product now offers the ability to track stats outside of Myspace on Youtube, Twitter, and Facebook.  (By the way, they’re free.)  We’ve also just introduced distributable song embeds which allow independent bands to have the same music that publishes to Myspace also play off of Myspace. And, we have more great artist products in the works, and some pretty neat stuff that will improve the overall experience for fans online and in mobile too.

“We even recently met with the Facebook team to talk about unique ways we could work together which truly benefit bands and the fans that are on the Facebook platform. I personally love the features Facebook offers, and also think Myspace offers a different and more colorful type of experience for artists and fans. We’re hanging in there because we believe that having different types of solutions in the market is a good thing for all, and we’re working hard and remaining positive because we believe that there is great value in our offering.  That value becomes more evident as we improve things following the relaunch of the Myspace experience. We continuously do user testing and talk with bands, band management, labels and fans too. For the open minded and forgiving people out there, do wish us luckâ€"the world will be a better place, in my humble opinion, if we here at Myspace really get it right to facilitate artist and fans connections through music over the Internet.

“Hit me up if you have positive passion and ideas about moving forward. If you don’t, no worries but we ain’t got time for the haters :-).

“Peace,
Roberto”
