A LOCAL primary school classes suspended from today, after almost 50 students contracted scarlet fever.
The first case was confirmed on 29 April and on Tuesday the figure in public school in the West of Shanghai, which has about 1,000 students, reached 47.
Of these, 12 students were recovered and 35 remain at home for treatment. The other 52 suspected cases were referred to told to stay home and put under observation.

Scarlet fever is a bacterial infection that affects mainly children between 2 and 12 years of age.
Symptoms include sore throat, a rash and a whitish or yellowish coating on the tongue.

Scarlet fever spreads through the saliva and nasal mucus and infected persons usually peaks in the spring, he added.

According to the Shanghai Health Bureau, the city reported 270 cases of scarlet fever in the past month.
Last year, 199 migrant people 221 local residents contracted the disease.
